MEETING TALK:
CLIMATE CHANGE EXTREMES BY THE SEASON
The detection of impacts related to human-caused climate change is called the `timing of emergence.’ This is a useful metric for societal and ecological planning, as it quantifies when changes in weather and climate have exceeded the historical range of natural variability for different regions of our planet.
In this presentation, Dr. Zachary Labe will discuss how we are using new data science approaches to quantify the timing of emergence of changes in temperatures across North America. He will also relate this timing of emergence metric to observed changes in the phenological onset of spring plant blooms using citizen science data and future climate change projections.

ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER:
DR. ZACHARY LABE is a Climate Scientist at Climate Central, where he explores the intersection of climate risk, future climate change scenarios, extreme weather events, early warning predictions, and data science tools. Beyond his research, he is passionate about improving science communication, accessibility, and outreach using storytelling and engaging visualizations.
Dr. Labe holds a B.Sc. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Earth System Science from the University of California, Irvine. Prior to joining Climate Central, he was a Research Physical Scientist at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. In 2019, he was selected as a Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and his science communication work is featured in dozens of local to international media outlets per year.
MEETING LOCATION & TIME:
- We will be meeting in person at Bonar Parkdale Presbyterian Church, 250 Dunn Ave, just South of Queen Street West.
- Arrive after 6:30 PM for refreshments and socializing, the meeting starts at 7:30PM.
- We will also be holding the meeting online through Zoom. Members will be sent the link in the newsletter in the week leading up to the meeting.
