    MEETING TALK:

    FOREST BATHING

This presentation with Emily Pleasance will introduce the practice of forest bathing, tracing its history, scientific foundations, and evolution into a contemporary approach of cultivating reciprocal relationship with the natural world. Emily will highlight its roots in ecopsychology and demonstrate how this perspective can be applied across multiple fields of work.

Attendees will gain insight into the practice itself through a brief example of forest bathing and will learn why it holds particular importance in today’s geopolitical and climate context. The session will also explore the distinct nature of climate emotions, and conclude with reflections on the Forest Bathing Club, a growing community of practice fostering connection, resilience, and ecological belonging.

    MEETING TALK:

    The Cape Floristic Kingdom:
Plant Biodiversity Hotspot and Horticultural Motherlode

The Cape Floristic region is located at the southern tip of Africa and is the smallest of the six recognized floristic kingdoms of the world. Despite being a relatively small area, the Cape is home to an astounding 9000 species of flowering plants of which 69% are endemic, including 12 families. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate, with wet winters and hot dry summers, and this has promoted an extraordinary diversity of geophytes (plants with bulbs and corms) and succulents.

Many well-known ornamental groups originated from the Cape and during this talk, SPENCER BARRETT will include examples of some of the most popular, including members of the Proteaceae, Ericaceae, Geraniaceae and Iridaceae. South Africans take a keen interest in their botanical heritage and we will visit several wildflower reserves to view the stunning spring wildflower displays, which were unsurpassed in 2024.

We will also visit three (3) botanic gardens at Kirstenbosch, Clan William and Worcester and delve into their diverse botanical collections. Finally, Spencer will provide a brief summary of research on the evolution and function of mirror-image flowers that I have been conducting in the Cape over the past three years with a multinational group of botanists.

    ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER:

SPENCER C.H. BARRETT is Emeritus University Professor and former Canada Research Chair in Evolutionary Genetics in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto where he has been a faculty member for 45 years, and has trained around 50 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. For his pioneering work on the reproductive biology and genetics of plants he was elected to the Royal Societies of Canada and London (U.K.), and the National Academy of Sciences, USA. Spencer loves gardening and plant exploration and has been fortunate during his career to have worked in many of the world’s floristic hotspots. He is currently working on research projects in China and the Cape Region of South Africa and, with the help of his wife Suzanne, maintains two gardens, one in Toronto and the other in the English countryside at Kintbury, Berkshire.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR, HORT MEMBERS!

Kicking off 2026 with our monthly speaker - DARRYL CHENG:

AN ENGINEER'S APPROACH TO HOUSEPLANT CARE

If you follow traditional houseplant advice, you'll be left with disappointment because your plant is no longer "perfect". Darryl's approach breaks down the barriers to true, long-lasting enjoyment of houseplants - when you understand how plants work, you can gain a deeper appreciation for their character and more acceptance of how they'll grow. It's a healthy dose of practical science and realistic expectations!

    ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER:

DARRYL CHENG is the author of 'The New Plant Parent' and 'The New Plant Collector' and creator of House Plant Journal. Darryl’s passion for plants and engineering approach to plant care have turned him into one of the most trusted houseplant resources on the internet! What was initially a hobby Tumblr page has turned into an Instagram account with over half a million followers, a go-to website for anything houseplant related, his very own houseplant care book, and plant time-lapse videos that have gone viral around the world.

    MEETING TALK:

CLIMATE CHANGE EXTREMES BY THE SEASON

The detection of impacts related to human-caused climate change is called the `timing of emergence.’ This is a useful metric for societal and ecological planning, as it quantifies when changes in weather and climate have exceeded the historical range of natural variability for different regions of our planet.

In this presentation, Dr. Zachary Labe will discuss how we are using new data science approaches to quantify the timing of emergence of changes in temperatures across North America. He will also relate this timing of emergence metric to observed changes in the phenological onset of spring plant blooms using citizen science data and future climate change projections.

    ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER:

DR. ZACHARY LABE is a Climate Scientist at Climate Central, where he explores the intersection of climate risk, future climate change scenarios, extreme weather events, early warning predictions, and data science tools. Beyond his research, he is passionate about improving science communication, accessibility, and outreach using storytelling and engaging visualizations.

Dr. Labe holds a B.Sc. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Earth System Science from the University of California, Irvine. Prior to joining Climate Central, he was a Research Physical Scientist at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. In 2019, he was selected as a Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and his science communication work is featured in dozens of local to international media outlets per year.

    MEETING TALK:

    COEXISTING WITH URBAN WILDLIFE

As passionate gardeners focused on native plants, pollinator-friendly landscapes, rewilding, and reconciliation in the garden, we’re also increasingly aware of the growing presence of urban wildlife—coyotes, skunks, possums, foxes, rabbits, and more—in our green spaces. But how do we ensure our gardens remain safe, welcoming, and ecologically balanced for both pollinators while also keeping our wild neighbours safe?

Join Victoria Badham from the Toronto Wildlife Centre for an informative and engaging talk on how to make our gardens more wildlife-friendly while learning the best practices for peacefully coexisting with urban animals. All are welcome to attend—come be inspired and informed as we grow greener, wilder, and wiser together!

    ABOUT THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER:

VICTORIA BADHAM is Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC)'s Education and Outreach Manager. She joined TWC’s Wildlife Hotline team in 2011 after completing her undergraduate degree in Environmental Policy and Urban Studies at the University of Toronto. Responding to thousands of hotline calls – from wildlife emergencies to requests for general wildlife information – increased Victoria's awareness of the vast issues affecting urban wildlife, as well as commonly held misconceptions about some wild species, and the urgent need for broader public education. She now holds a Master of Education from the University of Toronto and manages TWC’s hotline, education and outreach programs. Victoria aims to inspire children, youth and adults alike to respect and connect with nature and the amazing wild species with whom we share our neighbourhoods.

Our annual Plant fair is our biggest fundraiser,  sustaining our support for garden projects in the community.  We will be ordering in choice and interesting plants from select nurseries for resale, as well having divisions contributed from member's gardens (specially prepared to mitigate the spread of Jumping Worms). Additionally there will be vegetable seedlings, herbs and houseplants, and our very popular garden-related flea market, or "Green Elephants" as we call them. There will also be earthworm castings for sale.

The fair is held at Roncesvalles United Church, entrance at 240 Roncesvalles Avenue.
